DARKTHRONE
Before changing their name to Darkthrone in '87, they were called Black Death (Nor).
Darkthrone's name was inspired by a Danish zine from around 1985/86 called Blackthorn, written by the guys from the Danish band DesExult, as well as by the lyrics of the Celtic Frost song "Jewel Throne" (I'm the king, sitting in the dark hiding from the shadows of the wind/.../ As I gaze from the Jewel Throne to the portal of infinity). According to the December 2007 issue of Decibel Magazine, the Darkthrone logo was designed by Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates. On the cover of the Darkthrone album F.O.A.D. from 2007, the Deathhammer logo appears on the leather jacket of the drawn figure. Varg Vikernes of Burzum contributed lyrics to Transilvanian Hunger and Panzerfaust. In mid-2004, Peaceville Records released the "Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old School Black Metal" album, a compilation of old-school black and thrash metal music. It features groups like Mayhem, Burzum, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Sarcófago among others. Also, a similar compilation CD, called "Fenriz Presents The Best of Classic '80s Metal and Punk!", was freely distributed along the April 2008 issue of British magazine Terrorizer. It features groups like Onslaught, Necrophagia, English Dogs, Repulsion and others. Back in 1999, Fenriz, Satyr (Satyricon), Phil Anselmo (Pantera), Killjoy (Necrophagia) and Maniac (Mayhem) started a "supergroup" called Eibon. They were supposed to record a full-length, but due to their heavy schedule, plans were changed. Maniac left the band, and they released one track called "Mirror Soul Jesus" in the Moonfog Productions "Moonfog 2000 - A Different Perspective". They also recorded an unnamed song. Both of them were available for download from the Moonfog Productions site. Nocturno Culto and Fenriz have formed a new record label, Tyrant Syndicate Productions in cooperation with UK label Peaceville Records. Darkthrone started as a death metal band, but by the end of '90, beginning of '91, when they were rehearsing the "Goatlord" material, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous and Fenriz started to get into black metal. Soon they decided to abort the Goatlord sessions because the material didn't reflect what they felt, and started to compose the songs that were to be found on "A Blaze in the Northern Sky". Dag Nilsen was the only member who still wanted to play technical death metal, so he recorded the bass lines for "A Blaze..." and then left the band. Fenriz had a Doom Metal project named Pilgrim Sands in 1989, which eventually became Isengard in '89. Zephyrous left the band in 1993, and Fenriz recorded most of Transilvanian Hunger and Panzerfaust by himself, with Nocturno Culto merely singing. Fenriz has written lyrics for several other bands, among them Seth, Mayhem, Satyricon and Audiopain. Non-album tracks: "Ravnajuv" (differently mastered version) - released on the "Crusade from the North" compilation CD by Moonfog Productions (1996). "God of Disturbance and Friction" - released on the "Moonfog 2000 - A Different Perspective" compilation CD by Moonfog Productions (2000). DARKTHRONE items we have: |
